crane arrived at dawn
cool morning deer
grazed on frosted highway
grass still green on sun
ward slopes and crests
they ate in safety
that close to passing
vehicles on trans canada
highway with a scattering
of hunter’s parked trucks
far enough off the road
edge to lean into ditches
frost melted away
today by midafternoon
but ponds still have ice
ducks near the edge
crane left at sunset
